Blog 9: American Literature

Final blog post since the semester is finishing up. My blog topic will be about: which artist and/or writer inspired you most?

For me, I would say the writer that has inspired me the most was Allen Ginsberg. This was apparent through Ginsberg’s work, ‘A Supermarket in California’.

Through Ginsberg’s ‘A Supermarket in California’ has help open my eyes to a new outlook on how I view things in the world. As this piece metaphorically demonstrates people being under the control of consumerism and materialism.

For example, the line where it states, “Whole families shopping at night! Aisles full of husbands! Wives in the avocados, babies in the tomatoes!” For that particular line I interpreted Ginsberg’s use of visual imagery is that everyone is enslaved to consumerism. Everyone wants to purchase products in that time and even in today’s society, everyone is caught up with buying the latest iPhone, gaming console, etc.

In the second last paragraph Ginsberg states, “Will we walk all night through solitary streets? The trees add shade to shade, lights out in the houses, we’ll both be lonely.” This line is also one of the reasons why Ginsberg is an inspirational writer to me. He describes that streets and houses will be lonely because of everyone being out of their houses being consumed by materialism. As it states “lights out in the houses, we’ll both be lonely” describes the enslaved to consumerism and materialism, people will be concentrated on purchasing products, rather than focusing on each other.

This is why Allen Ginsberg is a writer that has inspired me the most as he is trying to convey the idea that society is so caught up with materialism. Through this we are able to see the importance of being separated from it, or else we would end up lonely.
